Baba Budangiri, at an elevation of 1895 meters, is one of Karnataka’s best-hiking destinations and one of the best sites to explore as part of a two-day journey from Bangalore. Baba Budan, a Muslim saint who used to live here, is the mountain’s name. Baba Budan was a Sufi saint who came to India from Saudi Arabia in the 17th century to spread a message of Islam and peace.
According to mythology, he brought coffee beans to India from the Yemeni port of Mocha in 1670 AD. For Hindus, this location is known as Dattatreya Peetha. Sri Dattatreya Swamy is thought to have lived in a cave near here. Both Hindus and Muslims participate in an annual Jatra or Urs, which takes place three days following the Holi Festival according to the Hindu calendar.
Mulliyangiri and Baba Budangiri are the two highest peaks in this range. These peaks are collectively known as the Chandra Drona Mountain Range because they naturally resemble a crescent moon.
4.Skandagiri:
Skandagiri is a historic mountain fortress located at an altitude of roughly 1350 meters, 61 kilometers from Bangalore City Junction and 5 kilometers from Chikballapur. It is close to the Nandi Hills in terms of location.
This is one of the best areas in Bangalore for trekking, especially for night treks, camping, and bird watching. Kalavara Durga is another name for Skandagiri. It has an old, decaying fort that once belonged to a native ruler, but was later seized and utilized by Tipu Sultan.
The fort was abandoned after Tipu’s defeat and is now in ruins. Only a few sections of the fort wall may be seen today. The Skandagiri trip is a moderately challenging hike. To get to the bottom of the slope, there are two options. One is a deviation from the route leading to the Nandi Hills and the other is from Chikballapur town.
The trip begins at the foot of the hill, at the Papagni Temple. This difficult and spectacular hike through a maze of dense vegetation is a fascinating experience. On the mountaintop, there are six stonewalls encircling an abandoned ancient temple.
5.Devarayanadurga:
Devarayanadurga is a rocky hill situated in the midst of a gorgeous neighborhood at an altitude of 3940 feet, 72 kilometers from Bangalore (near Tumkur). The temples of Yoga Narasimha and Bhoga Narasimha are the primary attractions of Devarayanadurga.
The Bhoga Narasimha temple sits at the bottom of the hill, while the Yoga Narasimha shrine is at the summit. This is a renowned tourist destination near Bangalore. This is also an excellent location for hiking. There is a motorable road all the way to the top of the hill. Many people walk up from the Bhoga Narasimha temple at the bottom of the hill.
To get a good perspective of the valley and the surrounding areas, travel further from Yoga Narasimha temple to the top of the hill. Devarayanadurga is known for the Namada Chilume natural spring, which is thought to be the source of the Jayamangali River. Ramatirtha and Dhanushtirtha are the names of two more springs. A big cave with Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana sculptures is nearby. Sri Bhoga Narasimha Swamy’s vehicle festival is conducted here in the months of March and April.
6.Yana:
Yana is a village in the Uttar Kannada district of Karnataka, located 24 kilometers from Benne Hole Falls, 30 kilometers from Kumta, 55 kilometers from Sirsi, 86 kilometers from Karwar, and 103 kilometers from Jog Falls.
The Western Ghats are well-known for their remarkable rock formations. The Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and the Mohini Shikhara are two large rock formations in Yana. Solid black, crystalline Karst limestone makes up the massive rocks. The Bhairaveshwara Shikhara is 120 meters (390 feet) tall, while the Mohini Shikhara is 90 meters (300 feet) tall.
At the foot of the Bhairaveshwara Shikhara, there is a cave shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Gangodbhava is the name given to the water that drips from the jutting rocks above the Shiva lingam. At the base of the Mohini Shikhara, there is an idol of Goddess Parvathi. According to legend, the demon king Bhasmasura once undertook penance in order to obtain a blessing from Lord Shiva. Bhasmasura tried to kill Lord Shiva, but he took sanctuary on the Bhairaveshwara peak in Yana. The other summit, known as Mohini, is said to be devoted to Lord Vishnu, who assumed the shape of Mohini and saved Lord Shiva by burning the demon Bhasmasura.
7.Charmadi Ghat:
Charmadi Ghat or Charmady is a Ghat in Belthangady taluk of Dakshina Kannada and Mudigere taluk of Chikmagalur, located 34 kilometers from Belthangady and 57 km from Chikmagalur.
It is one of Karnataka’s most popular ghat roads and one of the must-see attractions in Karnataka. The Charmadi Ghat is one of Karnataka’s most gorgeous and dangerous (to drive) Ghats. It is one of the few sites in the Western Ghats where a motorable route connects Dakshina Kannada with Chikkamagaluru.
The 25-kilometer section between Kottigehara and Charmadi Village is breathtaking, tranquil, and peaceful. It is located on the Mangaluru-Tumkuru National Highway 73. The verdant trees, evergreen plants, streams, and waterfalls of Charmadi Ghat are noted for their scenic splendor. 9.Jamalabad Fort:
Jamalabad Fort is a historic hilltop stronghold in Jamalabad Village near Belthangady in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada District, located 61 kilometers from Mangalore and 111 kilometers from Chikmagalur. It’s part of the Kudremukh mountain range. The fort is located at a height of 1700 feet.
The fort was once known as Narasimha Ghada, after the granite hill on which it is situated. It’s also known as Jamalagadda or Gadaikallu in the area. On the peak, there was once a mud fort. Tipu Sultan erected the fort in 1794 on the ruins of an ancient structure and named it after his mother, Jamal Bee. During the 4th Mysore War in 1799, the British conquered the fort. According to folklore, people who were unfriendly to Tipu were thrown down this fort to their deaths.
The fort is reached through a winding path with around 1800 steps carved out of the granite mountainside. There is a rainwater storage tank inside the fort. At the top, the remains of a single cannon can be found. There isn’t much left of the defenses, but indications of the fort wall with parapets can be seen.
At the summit of the hilltop fort, there is only one room. On top of the hill, there is also an unmanned microwave repeater station. Jamalabad is a famous trekking location that is rated as having a medium difficulty level. The fort’s summit provides excellent views of the surrounding area as well as the Kudremukh range.
10.Kudumari Waterfalls:
Kudumari Waterfalls (also known as Chaktikal Falls) is a stunning waterfall located in deep woodland near Chaktikal village, 43 kilometers from Murudeshwar, 53 kilometers from Jog Falls, 93 kilometers from Udupi, and 17 kilometers from Shiroor (on the Udupi-Karwar route).
Kudumari Waterfalls is a spectacular waterfall that cascades down from a height of 300 feet in a single step. From Chaktikal, a 3-kilometer hike through the deep forest is required. 11.Antharagange :
